International Foundation Programmes & Pathways to the UK

SBC’s International Foundation Year (IFY) is accredited by NCUK. NCUK has over 20 years of experience in organising and accrediting foundation programmes, which is why NCUK’s foundation certificate is recognised and accepted throughout the world as being the equivalent to UK A-Levels. Students enrolled on the IFY are expected to attend lectures, tutorials and seminars and assessments will be in the form of written reports, essays and timed exams.


International Foundation Year in Business

Business Studies: This course prepares students for studying business at a western university. Core areas include; Marketing, Accounting and Human Resource Management. Students completing this module will have received a rounded education in Business.

Economics: Students enrolling on the business IFY need to complete a module in economics. This broad subject covers several areas and over the year students are introduced to concepts such as Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Fiscal Policy, Monetary Policy and Foreign Trade.

British Film & Society in Contemporary Britain: This half module aims to widen students’ knowledge of contemporary British Cultural society and introduce them to sociological theory. In studying this theory, in conjunction with British cinema, students improve their analytical and critical skills preparing them for western university education.

Mathematics for Business: Mathematics for Business is a half module that equips students with the mathematical skills needed to succeed in studying for a business degree in the future. Subjects covered include; Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Linear Algebra.


International Foundation Year in Engineering

Mathematics: In this first year course a variety of topics are covered including: Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Linear Algebra. This course will provide a mathematical foundation for your future engineering study.

Further Mathematics: The Further Mathematics Module runs in conjunction with the IFY’s Mathematics module and Physics module. This module covers areas taught in the other classes but with more theory and in more detail. Further Mathematics also introduces students to advanced pure mathematics preparing students for studying Engineering in their future.

Physics: This physics course acts as excellent preparation for an engineering degree and students on the course learn core topics that include; Mechanics, Materials, Waves & Atoms.

Language Support

English for Academic Purposes (EAP): Students who have achieved an IELTS score of 6.5 do not have to take English. Students scoring IELTS 5.0 or equivalent need to enrol on SBC’s EAP course.

An understanding of English is key for making progress in all the subjects that you will study at SBC. The Year 1 English course is designed to give you the necessary skills in all 4 language areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking), be it in expressing ideas in spoken or written form, taking part in academic discussions, taking effective lecture notes or giving oral presentations.

Pathways to the UK

As well as SBC’s foundation programme SBC also runs pathway programmes to the UK. This means you can do the foundation year and then do the first year of your actual degree in Shanghai. This pathway is called a 2+2. You can also do a 1+2 if you do not need to do a foundaiton year. The full list of available pathways is listed below.
